SPOTLIGHT: My Brightest Diamond

September 5, 2012

Shara Worden’s voice is utterly distinct and unmistakable. I first heard her sing on a sampler CD sent to me by one of my favorite labels in the world: Asthmatic Kitty

The song was called “To Pluto’s Moon,” opening up with a sort of ambiance and her breathy, melancholy voice … I was hooked. Into the meat of the song it yet took awhile before a rhythm evolved and was expressed – the meter being largely implied by the pace of her lyric – and finally drawing out some bass and drums, tastefully, to deepen the matter. That voice, equal parts longing and resentful, can pull at one’s heart-strings in newly bittersweet strokes: the heavy strain of unrequited love.

The record, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth, remains one of my favorites and rarely gets put back into the shelves as I like to keep it handy. Sonically, the recording is very immersive and lovely, balanced nicely, and does the job of getting out of the way so that you can enjoy the experience. Musically speaking, prepare yourself for delectably-rendered emotional nudity – tastefully exposed, but nonetheless intimate and thoughtful. Have some samples, attached below. If you discover that you enjoy this music, the vinyl won’t disappoint you at all.
